What so unscriptural of this??

Gospel of Thomas (51) His disciples said to Him, "When will the repose of the dead come about, and when will the new world come?" He said to them, "What you look forward to has already come, but you do not recognize it."

What so unscriptural of this... If it was quoted by JP, will it be acceptable? What difference is this and... "It is finished" (Joh 19:30) ??

    • Eric Strebeck This basically says the same thing as "the kingdom of God is already in you", spoken by Jesus in the gospels. However, I don't generally recognize The Apocrypha as authoritative.

    • Roy Smith Keep reading.. they are fascinating - it's easy to discern. One of my favourites comes from the Secret book of John.. where he talks about the 144 000 children that were killed by Herod when he was trying to kill Jesus.. matches up perfectly with the 144000 in Revelation - they are children!!

I'm curious as to why you said "if JP quoted it would it be acceptable?" Why would it matter if JP quoted it? It's not scriptural because, while many of the sayings seem to align with the bible, the vast majority do not and it has always be
en recognized as a gnostic writing. The gospel of Thomas was not written by Jesus' disciple Thomas. The early Christian leaders universally recognized the gospel of Thomas as a forgery. It was rejected by the vast majority of early Christians. I tcontains many teachings that are in contradiction to the biblical Gospels and the rest of the New Testament. The gospel of Thomas does not bear the marks of a work of inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Are there any other arguments that preclude the gospel of Thomas from being included in the Bible? If we examine the 114 sayings in this writing, then we find some that are similar to existing sayings, some that are slightly different, but the majority cannot be found anywhere in the entirety of Scripture itself. Scripture must always confirm itself, and the majority of sayings in the gospel of Thomas cannot be confirmed anywhere else in Scripture.

The gospel of Thomas is a Gnostic gospel, espousing a Gnostic viewpoint of Christianity. .

The "Early Christian leaders" that canonised the bible at the council of Nicea, included the scriptures that supported their paradigm.. it's safe to say that if you can criticise those omitted, then you can also be in doubt about some of th
ose that were included! (not that I do)- Forgeries abound, but we cannot let that fact discourage us from exploration. I have personally found that amongst the "gnostic writings" there is much value, not only because of truths and different perspectives.. but also in discovering the intention behind the writings. Many of the elements of recent reformation are clearly shown in some of these writings, while the intention behind some of them is very clear strategy and can help to discern this kind of spirit. In short, I believe that we should explore and let others be free to do this as well, because the higher reality is that the Holy Spirit is our teacher and He guides us into all truth. Many of todays leaders openly criticise for bad theology, the very denominations that had the power to decide which were acceptable, based on their bias and which were not.

The Wod of God is the highest reality and I don't doubt it at all. God knew what He wanted in it. I don't care if people explore any writings. I myself like Josephus but I dont now or ever put them in the same place as the Word of God itsel
      f. The Gospel of Thomas is not now or ever will be Scripture. It's just a bunch of writings, much of which do not line up with the Word. The Word died for me not another word. I will stand by God's Word which was determined by Him Alone and not man. HIs Word is the only Authoratative Scripture. The Holy Spirit guides you into all Truth that lines up with the Word not any truth against it. No it is not safe to say if I can criticize those omitted I can doubt the ones included because I hold HIs Word as Supreme and Truth.

    • Roy Smith Well it's just amazing to me that all the exploits that happened, the healings and the fascinating progress that the early church enjoyed .. were all done without the "word of God".. they wrote them down afterwards and now this becomes the word of God by which we must test all things? God is much bigger than His book. I am simply trying to look at things from a different perspective.

    • Roy Smith There are also versions of the same events within the canonised gospels which differ greatly, geneaologies, the places where they happened.. peoples reactions and sometimes even the outcome.

The Person of Jesus Christ is another area where Christianity and Gnosticism drastically differ. The Gnostics believe that Jesus’ physical body was not real, but only “seemed” to be physical, and that His spirit descended upon Him at His ba
ptism, but left Him just before His crucifixion. Such views destroy not only the true humanity of Jesus, but also the atonement, for Jesus must not only have been truly God, but also the truly human (and physically real) man who actually suffered and died upon the cross in order to be the acceptable substitutionary sacrifice for sin (Hebrews 2:14-17). The biblical view of Jesus affirms His complete humanity as well as His full deity.

Christianity asserts that there is one source of Truth and that is the Bible, the inspired, inerrant Word of the living God, the only infallible rule of faith and practice (John 17:17; 2 Timothy 3:15-17; Hebrews 4:12). It is God’s written revelation to mankind and is never superseded by man’s thoughts, ideas, writings, or visions. The Gnostics, on the other hand, use a variety of early heretical writings known as the Gnostic gospels, a collection of forgeries claiming to be “lost books of the Bible.” I will not go to another source of beliefs to find out what Jesus said when His Word is enough. The exploits were not done without the Word for it was that Word that became flesh and made His dwelling among us.That Word which was prophesied about and written on scrolls throughout the ages. It was the Word that created all. You can choose to discredit the Word of God and many have throughout the centuries but yet it remains and long after you and I are gone it will still remain. There are no contradictions in the bible.

    • Tonie Campbell I'm trying to warn you that to put any writings outside of His Word and declare He is bigger than it is dangerous. There is nothing outside of HIs Word that is an alternate truth. That is gnoticism. You don't need to go further than it. All you need is there in it not beyond what is written

    • Roy Smith I appreciate your stance on the matter, I am no longer a staunch fundamentalist and our opinions are probably not reconcilable so I'm going to end the debate here. I believe that religion and doctrine has in many ways prevented and hindered spiritual growth in the Body of Christ. Bless you brother

I will leave with the same peace I came with and I will pray for you. To think someone is a "staunch fundamentalist" because they choose to actually take God at His Word is sad. I'm not a fundamentalist but a Christian who has faith in the
Word of God. For without it you can have no faith, just a mental ascent. I agree that religion has done damage but I don't have a religion. I have a relationship with Jesus Christ Who I hold higher than anyone else because in the end it is to Him we will bow and not another. I will live and die by the Word that lived and died for me and that is not fundamentalism but love for the One Who gave me everything when He owed me nothing. I will end my discussion here too with blessings on you but I'm not a brother by the way, Im a sister in Christ. Have a great day

Hallelujah! All glory to Jesus... If not for Jesus, who are we? Let's not forget He said... unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Does a child concern of which doctrine to follow? Doe
s a child see the difference in all these argument? Does a child question the beginning and worry the end? Lets not your heart be troubled for the Beginning is the End and the End the Beginning... for the Father is in the Son and the Son is in you... are One! It isn't about right or wrong, light and darkness or law and grace... Indeed you (Roy and Tonie) and i and everyone believed are One in Christ! But till our hearts see it... till we see no difference... then will you enter the Kingdom. This may sound heresy to many but the Truth shall reveal in time... Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear.

Pang I love you my brother but the sheep know His Voice and will follow no other. I'm sorry but this is where we will come to a disagreement but there is no other doctrine other than the Word of God or you follow a false Jesus. It is about
right and wrong and Truth. The Truth of His Word is the only Light. You enter the Kingdom through Jesus, the Word made flesh, not any other way. If it goes against the Truth then it is heresy
    • Pang William It is ok Tonie and i love you too... There is no another Jesus just like there is no darkness in Light, no wrong in Right... and we are the Light.
    • Tonie Campbell
There is no darkness in Light but there is no Light apart from the Truth of Gods Word Alone not any other doctrine my sweet Pang. God will not lead you away From His Word to follow new "docrines" He warns against that in His Word. I love y
ou and I will pray for you and end my discussion here with this. IF God were to tell you it's ok to follow anything that goes against or is outside of His doctrine it makes Him a liar and that He is not. He warns against following every wind and wave of deception being tossed about. I will pray for you. There is darkness and it's called the powers of darkness and they are behind the rampant leading away with these falsehoods and new doctrines. You cannot be the Light if you are letting darkness in influence you. We are told to wear the armor and stay in the Word to not be led astray. You came out of buddhism, don't go back in bondage seeking new "enlightenments" from sources other than the Word of God. I love you and i will be praying for you.♥

My dear Tonie... i am not following another doctrine and my heart is Christ's and Christ Jesus only... and please do not worry about me for i can never lose my salvation because His blood has made me righteous forever. I know what i believe
d in because He has opened my heart to see a deeper revelation...

Why so many of us are still struggle with sins, sickness, lack and death after understanding Grace for so many years. Because we still see the difference between Light and darkness, health and sickness, abundant and lack and Life and death. Why? Because we are still under the law. As long as we see the difference... we see the law and by the law is the knowledge of sin. Only we see no difference in all things... we see pure Light, we see pure Grace, we see One in all, we see Life and Life more abundantly. And in this Light, there is no darkness, in this Grace there is no law and in this Life there is no death.

How then can we see no difference? Only through the heart of a child... I pray that you see what i see. Seek Him and He will show you. Do you notice that i never argued with you about doctrines even though you believe i have fallen into another doctrine just because i quoted Thomas. Trust me i am not. Doctrines make differences and if i argue on them... i am back to the law, i have fallen from Grace.

Why i quoted JP was because another dear brother who has been with JP a long time also think i have fallen for another doctrine. And if you read my previous post... https://www.facebook.com/yasolovesme/posts/440776959294293 you would probably understand... but unfortunately he deleted all his posts. I hope he would read this... my explanation. Lastly we are not ruled by doctrines but by the Holy Spirit in us... pointing us to our LORD Christ Jesus. Thank you Tonie for your kind heart and your prayers. My prayer is... LORD, change us like little children and in Christ we reign! Amen.
Gospel of Thomas (22) Jesus saw infants being suckled. He said to His disciples
, "These infants being suckled are like those who enter the Kingdom."

They said to Him, "Shall we then, as children, enter the Kingdom?" Jesus said to them, "When you make the two one, and when you make the inside like the outside and the outside like the inside, and the above like the below, and when you make the male and the female one and the same, so that the male not be male nor the female female; and when you fashion eyes in the place of an eye, and a hand in place of a hand, and a foot in place of a foot, and a likeness in place of a likeness; then will you enter [the
      Kingdom]."

Mat 18:2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, :3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
