What is work and what is not work?

Pang William Rom 4:4 Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt. So what is work and what is not work? Is what you receive... grace or debt?

Thank you for all your comments. The reason of this post is because I've seen many believers confused between work and rest. I was once in such bondage too. They said they believed in the grace of God yet they said they have to do something... Some called it the act of faith, some called it sowing seed, some said... I do my part, God do His part just like Apostle Paul said "I planted, Apollo watered and God do the increase", one even said if God wants to give you, you at least need to stretch your hands to receive it. So what do you say?
      June 7 at 3:56am ·
    • Sandy Crosby its not that we are trying to get out of working, its just that it is futile to trust in our own work, its not about us...
      June 7 at 3:56am ·
    • June Melanson The working flows naturally out of our new identity in Him. It is not something that is forced or that we feel we MUST do. Instead, as Holy Spirit leads, our desires are to follow His lead. That's what makes it so easy and restful. We just go with the flow.....hahaha!

Many said God only help those who help themselves, but I said God can only help those who are helpless.

Some said get into action, don't be lazy, someone got to preach the gospel, someone out there needs the salvation. But I said "It is finished!".

Some said God gave you a brain to think, eyes to see... so they planed a whole year events, get as many members to carry out the plans. Does this one sound familiar to you? But I say... the works that you do is justified, you have fallen from Grace. I know many of you here understood the difference between work and rest. I writing to those who think someone must do the work.

    • Marsha Randolph I really appreciate what you have written. I have tried to share these thoughts to friends. In their heart I know they want to believe but years of hearing mesages of works makes it difficult to accept the rest that our Lord has given us. I pray for understanding.

    • Steven Pephyrs God only help those who help themselves. Is not from the Bible. Thome Jeffers said it. And he was not a beliver.

      June 7 at 9:06am ·
    • Pang William In time of need... how many of us can stand still and let God fright our battle? Rest indeed is the hardest thing to do, not just in action but in our heart. Take for instance, a believer is found with cancer. And the next thing the Doctor said is to do immediate treatment and it costs the money he does not have. So what would you suggest to him?
      June 7 at 11:59am ·
    • Sherry Ng well, it depends on the different faith of people to do things.
      June 7 at 2:26pm ·
    • Sherry Ng is preaching the word of god not counted as work as well? so just cant take one verse and interprete lah. is the pastor not receiving wages as well ? so can i say he is not grace?
      June 7 at 2:44pm ·
    • Pang William Is what I'm doing here counted work or grace? I don't receive wages here. Is Joseph Prince preaching to his Church, on TV, CD, DVD, books... consider work or grace? And he is receiving huge income on that. This is the question I asked? (see the topic) What is work and what is not work? The answer is in you. :)

      Romans 11:6 kjv
6And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.
This is an interesting topic which I think the Holy Spirit uses to enlighten many believes on many things...nt just rest and works...or grace and works...but something Paul is saying here...is basically that works and grace dont mix...even Jesus said it concerning the luke warm church...He said He wished they were either Hot or Cold...in works or grace...but not both...I think we have to start at the very beginning...and actually look at the definitions of these words...in a biblical context and in a general context...let's start by posting definitions and commenting on those...I believe the Holy Ghost is going to help us understand better...so that we can be more into Grace...and less into works...like a baby...I'm starting a fresh...Father help me understand...through ppl posting on this thread...that I might live a more fulfiling life...full of understanding...

    • Dhlamini Thafi GRACE. That which a person is not entitled to by law, but which is extended to him as a favor; a pardon, for example, is an act of grace. http://www.dictionary.net/grace

Thanks Dhlamini for your comment. I totally agreed with you that grace and work don't mix. If mixed, we becomes lukewarm. But you have not made anything clear on the topic of what is work and what is not work? Another word... by what do weconsider the thing we do as work and by what do we consider the thing we do as grace. Only then we can understand which is work and which is grace. Surely only by revelation we can understand clearly this issue. I believe you are highly anointed to receive this revelation. Please refer to my above comment on "In time of need..." and share with us your suggestion to the patient.

I heard JP saying today that God made man last so he could enjoy all HIS work, & God gave man a job, all he had to do was give names to all the animals...God even brought all the animals to Adam, he didn't have to even go out & find them.
Hey Pang, I lov that wha u sed about God helps the helpless.

      Isaiah 30:18
And therefore will the LORD wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him.
The children of Israel were still doing their own thing...which is a picture of works...and they were not where God wanted them to be or doing what He wanted them to be doing...so the Lord says He will wait first...the verse says that the Lord will wait...that He may be gracious...the verse also says that blessed are those who wait on Him...
Now until they are where the Lord wants them to be...He will wait...coz He cant grace them when they are still in works...

Grace has to do with rest...and rest is really waiting on God...and it might refer to an activity that will not produce results unless God comes through...
Works has to do with activity that promises results without wating for God...
Basically the Lord was saying that since they were in works...He will wait until they are in rest...waiting on Him...then He will be gracious to them...as long as they were in works there was no grace...
      Example...righteousness...
Works says...I have to do and keep the law to be righteous...can you see...no waiting on God...no relying on God to make one righteous...
Grace says...There is nothing I can do to be righteous on my own...therefore I will believe in the righteousness that is in Christ...notice that the believing will not produce any result if God doesn't come through...it is all dependent on Christ...
The Holy Spirit is the one who is going to help us know what we have to do to be in Rest...I believe there is a unique thing every christian should be doing under the same situation...
      Example...Financial need...
The Holy Ghost can say to one christian...Go ask for the money...The Lord will make someone available who will assist you...
To another He might say...Sow into so-and-so's life...and the Lord will multiply your seed and you will get a nice harvest..
To another He might say...dont worry its taken care of...I just need you to forget about it...
Even for the patient...God will have for them exactly what they should do to be at Rest...He might say go for the procedure...I will heal you through it...but know that without the Lord coming through...there will be no healing...
How many ppl go for medical procedures...n still they dont make it...I'd say they go in...expecting the procedure to be sufficient...they go in with Works...
Or He might say...start drinking water mixed with a little bit of salt...can you see that on its own...this will not bring the healing...but only when the Lord gets involved...
Basically....Works refer to an activity that is not Spirit guided...that the worker expects to get results from...
Grace refers...to doing an activity or no activity that is Spirit guided...that they worker realises that it will not be fruitful unless God takes part in it...
This is a mouthful...I hope the Holy Spirit will help us get more understanding...and revelation regarding this topic...I'm definitely praying that He will help me explain it the way He wants it explained...
      June 8 at 4:56pm ·
    • Nina Sianturi When we do our activities out of rest and by trusting and relying on God that supplies the strength/wisdom and whatever we need to get the result. And when we see the result we know that it's not of us but it is of God. It will end up by giving glory to Jesus. That's Grace!
      June 8 at 9:22pm ·
    • Dhlamini Thafi
fully agree Nina...the one thing we can be fully assured of...concerning believers who are relying on God's Grace...I mean a common denominator across all these christians...it is gratitude...Grace starts and ends with Him...it starts withus...looking to Him for whatever we need...and it ends with us...thanking Him for coming through for us...That's Grace...
its starts and ends with Jesus...even the bible says He is the author and finisher....I like...thanks for you comment...

I praise Daddy for you... Dhlamini and Nina. We all needed words of faith like these. It encourages us to live by faith and not by sight. I brought out the example of the cancer patient is... it can be a difficult situation to decide whether or not to take the treatment. Some might say go for it. but I say... wait on the Lord, if He wants you to take the treatment, the money will be there. If not, still believe and trust Him for a miracle. No matter what... counted yourself healed! That is faith, that is grace!

Come back to the area of what is work and what is not work which is quite clearly explained above. Please allow me to summarize it. First point to be stated clear is... Rest is a Spirit led activity or non activity. Whatsoever we do out of the fruits of the Spirit is not considered work. Example: The work I do here come out of the love, the joy and the peace of my heart and thus I don't consider it work but grace. On the other side, whatsoever we do out of our flesh desire is work. Such as thinking that our work would help to accomplish our ministry, or help in the church's growth. We are trying to help God. This is dead work!

I want to thank everyone here for your posts. As I was led by the Spirit to post such a topic... I believe someone needed to hear it. To whoever you are... I pray for a hearing heart on you to see this truth. In 1Pe 5:5 says God resist the proud but give grace to the humble. If we esteem ourselves, we can learn nothing. Shalom, shalom!

    • Roby Hardyman For me... "Everything in this world can not produce grace, but grace can produce everything"
      June 9 at 1:44pm ·
    • Pang William No work can produce grace... I agreed cos grace is gift. But grace can produce everything? Not really... Grace can't marry those who still married to the first husband.

WOW...this is a powerful topic...Remember what Jesus said concerning His burden and yoke...He said for My yoke is gracious and my burden is light...Matt 11:30...Strong's dictionary says that the word easy used can also mean gracious...WOW...I know some ppl might have a problem with...rest being defined as an inactivity or ACTIVITY...but I want to remind...that if it comes from Jesus...it is going to be easy, gracious and light for you...Our pastor says rest is not to be equated with laziness...thus rest can be an activity...just know that it will be something the Lord knows will be easy for you to do...on the other hand...Works are hard...and stressful...lets us wait...and rest on the Lord...and enjoy the gracious and easy yoke and His light burden...Hallelujah!!!!
