Are you of the New Covenant or the Old or Both?

Tina Willis In the past, I would sometimes get depressed when reading the Bible. Now I know why. I did not understand the important distinction between the two operating systems - the Old Covenant and the New Covenant. I was operating under both, but God never intended for the two to be mixed. We are to chose one.

I don't think God does "takebacks". His words stand forever. It is only our understanding that changes.

Kermit, with all due respect, it's time for the church to wake up and see how good we have it on this side of the cross. Some Christians are fixated on the law when it's only a shadow. Hebrews 8:6 says "The ministry Jesus has received is as superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises. IF the law were able to save, there'd be no reason for the NEW. The OLD is OLD news! Something greater is now in effect, so why wouldn't we hold fast to the NEW? OT believers were justified by faith ALONE, apart from the law. Does the law involve faith? NO, the Bible clearly shows that "the Law is NOT of Faith (Gal. 3:12). After all, does it take faith to carry out religious tasks or adhere to regulations?

OT saints such as Abraham were made right because they put their confidence in God and in the coming Messiah (Romans 4:13) Abraham lived long before the law, but he was declared righteous.

SO BEING "RIGHT" WITH GOD.... NEVER, NEVER, NEVER HAD ANYTHING TO DO THE LAW! Now that's GREAT news! Amen.

SHEILA: I love you my peep SIC. The purpose of the Old Covenant, which is the 10 commandments is for one audience... unbelievers. It is to show man that it can NEVER be kept, that it is IMPOSSIBLE to keep, that no one has ever been able to keep it, nor is there anyone who ever will be able to keep it. Through the law, God shouts that he demands no less than perfection. When the world sees the standard, they have no choice but to "SHUT UP". Their mouths are silenced. Check this out:

Galatians 3:22 New American Standard Bible says,
But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. And...

      Romans 3:19-20 says,
Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God; because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.

So we have a choice, we can live under the law to be right with God, or we can be "made" right with God by the blood of Jesus. We get to choose! I choose the blood, Sister... it's the only way. Jesus said, I am THE Way, THE Truth, and The Life and ain't no one getting to Father but through me (the "ain't" is Tina's version : )

When we seek our own righteousness, we will always end up feeling miserable because we can never be righteous by our works, no matter how hard we try. That is why our loving Father wants us to remember that righteousness is not right behavior but a person — Jesus (1 Corinthians 1:30), and that we have “become the righteousness of God in Him”.

The Law was to show us we was sinners, and that because of our sin we could never please God. The law was fulfilled IN and BY Jesus. HIS righteousness is now the gift to all who will receive it. ALL sin has been PAID IN FULL, OVERPAID, really. Save ONE. Not believing Christ. Not believing that God the Father will BY NO MEANS EVER remember your sin, BECAUSE it was punished FULLY in Jesus on the cross.

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. Matthew 5:17 (ESV)

Did Jesus ever NOT do what He said He was to do? Did He leave ANYTHING "unfulfilled". What is "fulfilling the Law"? The righteous man KEEPS the Law to God's standard of perfection, and the UNRIGHTEOUS MAN MUST DIE. Jesus kept ALL of God's Law TO GOD'S STANDARD OF PERFECTION, AND He STOOD IN THE PLACE OF THE UNRIGHTEOUS, and DIED in their (OUR) PLACE. He fulfilled the Law COMPLETELY. Every jot, every tittle. And Heaven and Earth has not yet passed away...His words have PROVEN TRUE.

Nobody here preaching the Gospel of Grace is even SUGGESTING that anyone live in any way that BREAKS the Law. Licentiousness is the RESULT of man's inability to do what Jesus did, keep the Law to God's standard of perfection. And so God the Father nailed the Law to the Cross.

13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Colossians 2:13-14 (NKJV)

56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:56-57 (ESV)

God the Father HIMSELF erased His "handwriting", because ALL has been fulfilled in Jesus. And so, He is RIGHTEOUS in counting the BELIEVER "righteous". His own righteousness is counted as ours.

5 And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, 6 just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works: 7 “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; 8 blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin.” Romans 4:5-8 (ESV)

It was the LAW that brought sin "to a head". And so it does to this day.

7 What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” 8 But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law, sin lies dead. 9 I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. 10 The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. 11 For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. 12 So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good. 13 Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure. Romans 7:7-13 (ESV)

19 Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. Romans 3:19-20 (ESV)

1 Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. 2 We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. 3 Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God? 4 Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that GOD'S KINDNESS IS MEANT TO LEAD YOU TO REPENTANCE? 5 But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed. Romans 2:1-5 (ESV)

The Gospel of Grace is that there is a RIGHTEOUSNESS and JUSTIFICATION that comes APART from the "works of the Law", APART from "doing good". And, rejoicing at the knowledge of being COUNTED RIGHTEOUS by God the Father and so BEING at PEACE with Him, RIGHT LIVING results, and by His grace, anything that "falls short" IS NOT EVEN COUNTED by God the Father!

8 blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin.” Romans 4:8 (ESV)

This only makes sense WHEN A SIN HAS BEEN COMMITTED. If the Law is kept, then there is NO SIN TO "NOT COUNT" against the man!

Israel in the desert between Egypt and Sinai is the pristine picture of living in this grace, where God does not even seem to notice the sin! For every whine and accusation, God does NOT PUNISH, HE PROVIDES! Abraham lying about Sarah to Pharaoh and Abimelech is another EXCELLENT picture of "life under GRACE".

It was always about BELIEVING GOD, since the VERY FIRST SIN. WRONG BELIEVING led to the WRONG LIVING, the wrong "action", the wrong "work" of eating the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. The "wrong living" of choosing to live UNDER LAW, BY MEANS OF "SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS".

Righteous people do righteous things BECAUSE they are righteous, NOT to "become" righteous. THAT is "grace".

Beverly, for me personallly, it absolutely "IS" about choosing. When we are under the law, we are under the ministry of death (2 Corinthians 3:7 ~ But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away, how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious?)

When I lived under both, I felt like I was dying a slow, miserable death... didn't know why at the time, but now I understand why. When I tried to maintain my own righteousness out of obligation, it was nothing more than self righteousness and what I was doing was nullifying the finished work of our Lord.

Now that I am under grace, I am have a sincere desire to live a godly life and the Holy Spirit empowers to be in a position where sin no longer has dominion over me. Does that mean that I am without sin? Absolutely not, but when I do miss the mark, I thank God that my sins and lawless deeds He remembers no more. I thank Him that I am forgiven. Knowing this and believing that there is no condemnation for those in Christ, is what empowers me to go and sin no more! Woo-Hoo! That is the power of the blood of our Jesus! Glory to God forever!

Tina, when you are reading the Bible, you got to understand that each testament has its own significance. There are things you can learn from the Old Testament and there are also things you can learn from the New Testament. When you get depressed when reading the Bible, then you are reading it with the wrong mindset. Remember, the Bible is the Supreme Word of God and inspired by him. It should bring joy, wisdom and restoration. As a christian washed with the blood of Jesus, you should be operating under the grace of God and under the promises of God in the New Testament. However, you can also learn from the Old Testaments books of Genesis, Psalms and Proverbs as well as the Prophets. The Bible is the basic manual written by God for us and he often speaks to us in scriptures. It is very important that before you read the Bible, you have to fully submit your mind to the Holy Spirit and let him teach you and give you divine wisdom in understanding what you are reading. Also, it is very important that you imply what you have read into your daily life.

I too got the "oppression" when reading the Bible before Grace got through to me. Old Testament, New Testament; it didn't matter. There are points that don't feel right when GRACE is absent. Nothing whatever to do with being "submitted". It was the CONDEMNATION MINDSET, the "evil conscience" that would drive me from the throne in fear. I know firsthand what is meant by a "conscience seared with a hot iron". I couldn't see the Hand that was waiting to lift me to safety, because everywhere I looked, I saw me FALLING SHORT...

22 We have been sprinkled {with his blood} to free us from a guilty conscience, and our bodies have been washed with clean water. So we must continue to come {to him} with a sincere heart and strong faith. 23 We must continue to hold firmly to our declaration of faith. The one who made the promise is faithful. Hebrews 10:22-23 (GW)

1 The Spirit says clearly that in later times some believers will desert the Christian faith. They will follow spirits that deceive, and they will believe the teachings of demons. 2 These people will speak lies disguised as truth. Their consciences have been scarred as if branded by a red-hot iron. 3 They will try to stop others from getting married and from eating certain foods. God created food to be received with prayers of thanks by those who believe and know the truth. 4 Everything God created is good. Nothing should be rejected if it is received with prayers of thanks. 5 The word of God and prayer set it apart as holy. 1 Timothy 4:1-5 (GW)

kautēriazō Thayer Definition: 1) to mark by branding, to brand, BRANDED WITH THEIR OWN CONSCIENCES
1a) whose souls are branded with the marks of sin
1b) who carry about with them THE PERPETUAL CONSCIOUSNESS OF SIN

GRACE is the ONLY Way. And from Grace, Scripture opens up!

51 “Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” 52 And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.” Matthew 13:51-52 (ESV)

There is ONE LAW in Christ; BELIEVE! When we believe, the love that we are loved with FLOWS THROUGH US, to Him, and to each other!

28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” John 6:28-29 (ESV)

Full circle, from the original sin of DISBELIEVING GOD, to BELIEVING CHRIST. It's the only "clause" in the New Covenant; that we BELIEVE that Papa ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT remember our sins any more.

31 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.” Jeremiah 31:31-34 (ESV)

ROFLMHO!!! WOOOO THE HOOO! Call me the "Laughing Dog Preacher"!!

Here's another verse, to tie up a few loose ends...

15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” 16 But they have not all OBEYED THE GOSPEL. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has BELIEVED what he has heard from us?” 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. Romans 10:15-17 (ESV)

    • Pang William Rom 3:25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, 26 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. ... BELIEVE=FAITH=OBEDIENCE=....GRACE!!!!

Noel, the Pharisees knew the Scripture inside and out, and Saul was the "Hebrew of the Hebrews". Look at what Scripture WITHOUT THE GRACE OF CHRIST pressed HIM to do! And then, When Christ came to him, he became PAUL, THE APOSTLE OF GRACE, rightly dividing the Word of God through the Cross. Jesus is the "key" to Scripture. Without Him, there is only failure. So says Scripture.

10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” 11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” 12 But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. Galatians 3:10-14 (ESV)

William, have you looked at the Greek for "propitiation"?

      hilastērion
      hil-as-tay'-ree-on
Neuter of a derivative of G2433; an expiatory (place or thing), that is, (concretely) an atoning victim, or (specifically) the lid of the Ark (in the Temple): - mercyseat, propitiation.

JESUS is the "mercy seat", that covers all the tokens of man's "falling short", the Stone Tablets, the Budded Rod, and the Manna that was rejected....

And HE IS ABOVE ALL! COVERED IN THE BLOOD OF ATONEMENT!

      GRACE! GRACE!

The Whole word of God is beneficial for us, but we must Rightfully divide the word. The Old Testament points forward in history to the Cross, The New Testament points back to the Cross. We are in the New Covenant and as such enjoy the blessing of the Finished work of the Cross. Jesus work on the Cross fulfilled ALL the Requirements of the Old Testament, the Prophesies about Him and the Laws, The Old Testament shows us our need of a Savior. In the New Testament The Savior has arrived in Power and Glory, and we enjoy the fruits of his labor. Hallelujah

The Old Testament also hold pictures of OUR LIFE under His grace, as when Israel first left Egypt. Jesus was "slain from the foundation of the world", and we even see "pre-incarnate" visitations of His throughout the Old Testament.

Jesus has ALWAYS been "in His own timezone"! ;-)

    • Bethel Collie There was a time when I'd look for God's discipline and correction when I read the Bible so that I could confess and get forgiveness. Once I was reading and thinking "where am I here" He whispered that I was the good guy in this particular story. Wow. Slowly but surely He has freed me and freed me and freed me. I'm resting.

Joh 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

The Holy Spirit has only one sin to convict the world of and that is the sin of unbelief! But to the believers... He only convict them of their righteousness in Christ Jesus. And to the devil... that he is defeated!

But many believers are hearing more from the accuser instead of from Holy Spirit... Why??? Whenever we live by the law (sin conscious), we awaken the accuser for his weapon is the law. But if we live by Grace (righteous conscious), we become sensitive to the Holy Spirit and His very present becomes real in us to hear His voice sharply... and the Holy Spirit... always, always and always remind you of your righteousness in Christ! Never, never and never convict you of sin! Hallelujah!!
